At night, during high tide, eels crawl up through cracks in the sandstone walls at the edge of the Botanic Gardens at Farm cove where they meet Sydney Harbour. They then wriggle their way into the ponds there, where they are safe from the predators of the deep. Lake St. James is a product of runoff from the irrigation systems at the Botanic Gardens and The Domain. The trip is really quite a simple one
